Sunday Fun

Sunday Dominic re-discovered legos. He goes through phases where he doesn't play with them and then will play with them for hours one day. He was making some pretty cool ships while we watched Extreme Makeover Home Edition (or as Dominic calls it, The Helping People Show). He was very proud of his creations as they were quite large.
Birds Eye View
Getting busy digging for more parts. These are all Sean's childhood legos. I love watching Dominic's imagination go wild!
Meanwhile, Penny was busy putting her babies in time-out. "Yucy Time out, Baby time out. Say sorry." It was pretty cute. Lucy (or Yucy if you are Penny) is her pink baby, named after Lucy who came over last week to play and Penny designated this doll as Lucy's when she was here. After Lucy went home, Penny kept calling the baby Yucy and it has stuck. Her blue one was Dominic's when he was a baby and she just calls it Baby. She won't give it a name, we've tried.

Notice the purple cast, we got her pink cast wet and had to take her in to get it off and put on another one....oops! She insisted that we put another smiley face on it though. =)

She was also walking around with a phone up to her ear saying "Eva, call me back" clear as could be. Eva (my sister) is her favorite person to call on the phone (besides her dad) and she asks to call her all the time and will say her name over and over and over until we get her on the phone. The conversations last about 15 seconds. If we end up leaving a message we hear "Eva call me back" like a broken record until she gets to talk to her.

When kids in Dominic's class do something they aren't supposed to, they have to write sorry letters that get sent home. This is a letter someone had to write to Dominic (which a copy was sent home with this child also). I could not stop laughing after I read it........ Enjoy

Teacher present

I decided this year to make a game for Mrs. Roderick's classroom as a thank you to her for all her work as a teacher this year. They play a lot of games after their work is done and this one I know that 1st graders will love. I wish I would have done it at the beginning of the year so that Dominic could have played with it!

I took an idea and expanded on it. First, I put two magnets together with hot glue and sandwiched the string inside. I made the rope the length of the stick and added a washer at the bottom so that it stored easily without twisting around the others (I'm giving her 6 poles). I screwed a hook into the end of the pole where I fastened the non-magnet end of the string. I put a vinyl window in the fish so that you could slide in things to work on like:

spelling words
fact families (list 8,4,12 and they have to give all four facts to that family)
numbers (decide before you play if you are + or - what specific number to the number in the fish)
words (I'll do this with Penny)

they really are a versatile little fishing game.

You could even use this for family home evening or any other concept you want to teach. Just tuck the slips of paper with whatever you want taught into the clear window of the fish and let your kids

Homemade Laundry Soap

I finally did it. I've had the stuff to make my own laundry soap for over a month. Today I finally made it. Its really great and less than $0.01 a load. =) It wasn't hard and you can find the direction on my friends blog here. I found all the ingredients at my local supermarket (AKA Raley's Belair). I It smells like my Grandma Williams soap plain (I haven't put any oils in it to give it a scent but am going to go get some fresh scent to add to it).

Penny's new found love

Penny loves the computer...or as she calls it, the pan-oh (piano). Sean and I are on the computer a lot for our business' and I think she has just figured that if mom and dad are doing it all the time, it must be fun. This old computer of Sean's is her new favorite toy.

Ode to birthdays

Forgive me mom, there is no civility in this song....

but when we made it a few weeks ago the laughs from Dominic and his friend were priceless.

Today was the day

Mom, do you still have these pictures on CD or who does? The only one I have is this picture of the picture:

Usually when I drop Dominic off from school I give him a kiss and then tell him, "Have a great day, I love you, be good!" I keep waiting for the day when its not cool anymore. Today was it. Today I kissed him, and

he said "Do you think its embaressing if someone sees us kiss?"

I said, "No, I don't.... but what do you think?"

"Yes. I don't think anyone saw us though. At least, I hope not"

I laughed and sent him away. After school we often hold hands and walk to the car. Wonder when he'll realize people might see us doing that. I frowned the whole way home......he's getting too cool for mom already. Good thing none of his friends can see us snuggling before bedtime. I'll get my kisses in then.

random happenings

These are just random happenings from last week that I loved.

We finally got a rocking horse....kinda....Its a rocking moose. =) Stella gave it to Penny and she loves it! No more riding books, cards and toys.
Dominic has turned into quite the bookworm. Of course, I have to bribe him with Bakugan...BUUuuuuuuuuuUUT...I'm okay with that. =) He has to read a whole chapter book (around 50-90 pages) and re-tell it to me in order to get one. He has struggled with reading comprehension a little bit so this has helped take away some of the frustration because he gets something he loves in the end. It usually takes him a good hour or two to read a book this length. (I buy the bakugan in packs of 6 to decrease my cost per Bakugan but only let him earn them one at a time)

I've actually struggled with Bakugan. He loves them but they are expensive. The cheapest I can get them is $3.75 each (if I buy them in packs of 6) and about 1 in 8 that we buy malfunctions and won't close properly. We've mailed some back and had them send new ones...but its just annoying.

1st Grade Habitat presentation

All the first graders did a performance together. It was about habitats. Dominic's class did the Oceans portion.

This girl goes home and tells her mom that Dominic is her boyfriend. Dominic is so "bothered" by it because of all the teasing that is associated with girlfriends, but the drama behind it tells me otherwise. She's a very nice girl and I told her mom that I thought she had good taste =)

He did SUCH a good job! and I got quite a few winks from him up there. I love him. Penny didn't like him being 3 rows away and kept yelling "Dominic, come here! Uh-Hug!"

Here was his classes part. I couldn't get it all because Penny ran under some guys chair and got Dominic did a great job. He actually had all the parts memorized.... He's always been a good memorizer. When he was 3 he could memorize scriptures faster than Sean and I!

This was Penny's favorite song:

Habitat presentation song: He knows how to melt my heart...the shy grin and wink at the end just about killed me!

Really? I'm a hippo? This one made me laugh...."I'm big and very heavy and I eat a lot of food!" Good song....good song.

He fell asleep in the car the other day. He was really tired.
He loves to snuggle and this time he put his arm around me. He is one of the most compassionate little boys I've ever met. Before he fell asleep he said "I don't think I want to play video games anymore. My family and friends are more special to me and I think I would rather be with my family and friends." I love him.

Who Has the Frog?

Last night we walked outside for a brief moment and saw a frog on the patio area. It was teeny and I would have never seen it, Dominic spotted it. I picked it up and we brought it in to play with for a little bit. Penny was so giddy about it and Dominic so proud. It was "stinkin cute" as we kept saying. Penny has learned a new phrase....

Photo Phobias

Okay Annie, here's my photo phobia picture. Undoctored (except the lighting and the chocolate I had on my face....seriously, am I 12? Chocolate on my face?? I attacked a chocolate bunny we had on top of the fridge and it told on me)

I don't like photo's of my because I have a crooked nose, big forehead and non-existant eyebrows. But, I have decided that I don't care and to love me anyways. I look back at pictures from years past and think "wow, I was much prettier than I thought I was." So, I'm sure in 5 years I'll look back at these and think differently than I do now so I try to savor my youth..... =) Wrinkles and all..........

That was fun Annie!

So you tell me, was the hairdo worth an arm? lol. I like it really dark and find myself thinking I'm seeing Julia out of the corner of my eye now and then. Which is funny cuz I didn't think I looked like Julia very much. Sean says it looks exotic...which I think means hot?

My haircut cost me an arm

I am the worst mother (kidding, I know). I had a hair appointment yesterday and just before I left I was trying to get Penny down for a nap. She was having a hard time falling asleep but she was definitely tired. I finally just resorted to giving her a plug (I take it out of her crib before she wakes up so she doesn't even remember having it...this was the second time I did this since we've cut them up) and laying her in the pack-n-play to figure it out and fall asleep on her own. Usually when I do this it takes 2 minutes.... Well, I left her with Grandma and went to get my hair done. Apparently she was mad about it and tried to make an escape. Grandma said she heard a thud and then crying so she went in Penny's room and found her on the floor crying. She picked her up and rocked her to sleep in her chair in the living room. When I got home we played for a bit and then she said "owie, hand, owie". When I squeezed her wrist she yelped in pain and I knew she had broken something. Off to the doctor we went.

She wasn't in a lot of pain, just when she put weight on that wrist or if I squeezed it (or the doctor). She was still using her handWhen the doctor came in Penny said a cheerful, "Hi Vicky!" to which Vicky laughed out loud and said. "If I had a girl I would want Penny." I told her she wasn't for sale. =) She had a buckle fracture of the distal right ulna, non-displaced.

We went to another doctor and had it casted. She had pooped through her last diaper (it was a 6 hour ordeal from when we left the house to get casted) and so she was being casted quickly because going comando on a 17 month old doesn't last long without a mess. The Orthopedist was good about it and quickly got it done. Penny wanted a black cast but he convinced her to get a pink one. Thanks doc.

So, apart from the cost of my cut and color, my haircut also cost us an arm (but no legs!).

Oops...... I wub much for our swimming plans in this hot weather!
We're off to the park to play on the swings...

Recipe's to share

A friend of mine from The Pocket Area in Sacramento is having a recipe party (Becky you are amazing!). There will be about 15+ people in attendance tomorrow night and I cannot tell you how excited I am to go. Yes, to see old friends but also to SHARE RECIPE IDEAS. Rules were: it had to be something you could make without wierd ingredients and that were some what healthy. These are some of my tried and true that I just wrote up and thought I would share. They are regulars at my house. Enjoy

Asparagus or Green Bean Bundles

¼ cup bread crumbs (parmesan or Italian style taste best)
1 Tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley
1 tsp freshly grated lemon peel
1 Tbsp fresh grated parmesan

1 large bunch asparagus or equivalant green beans steamed to almost done

8 slices thin ham (I use thin sliced lunch meat)

Heat oven to 400. Steam vegetables until almost done (about 5 minutes) and crisp-tender.

Put 1 Tbsp olive oil in bottom of shallow baking pan. Arrange small bundle of asparagus or green beans on one piece of ham and roll up. Place in pan seam side down. Repeat until all veggies are used. Flatten bunches slightly and sprinkle with topping.

Bake for about 10 minutes or until thoroughly heated and crisp. Serve immediately!

35 minute Spaghetti Sauce

It adds to the flavor to use fresh herbs though dry herbs will still taste good. You can buy fresh basil, garlic, parsley and oregano in a paste form by the fresh stuff in the grocery store. It usually comes in a tube and will keep forever in the fridge.

3 cups tomatoes, peeled and quartered (or 3 cans of diced tomatoes)
½ medium quartered onion
6 ounce can tomato paste
1 clove garlic or equivalent paste
1 tsp Parsley
1 tsp oregano
½ tsp basil
dash of cinnamon
¼ tsp pepper
salt to taste
½ tsp sugar or honey
1 bay leaf or equivalent crushed bay leaves.

Place all ingredients except bay leaf in mixer in order listed. Mix to desired consistency. Pour into saucepan. Add bay leaf and simmer for 30 minutes. Stir frequently, remove bay leaf. Serve over cooked spaghetti or use in lasagne.

Variation: cook meat or veggies in skillet and then add meat to sauce while it simmers.

Louisiana Hot Sausage and Black Bean Soup

it sounds really weird but really….the combination will surprise you!

2 T olive oil
1 cup chopped onions
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
1 pound Kielbasa sausage (or equivalent) sliced in round pieces
2 15-ounce cans black beans, undrained
2 cups chicken broth (or water + bouillon cube equivalent)
1 cup orange juice

1) Heat a large saucepan over medium heat until hot
2) Add oil and onions. Cook until onions soften and turn slightly golden
3) Stir in Garlic and cumin. Cook briefly but do not let garlic brown.
4) Stir in remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Makes 6 servings

Baked Macaroni and Cheese

2-3 cups macaroni noodles uncooked
cheddar cheese cut into small cubes
garlic salt
paprika (optional)

Preheat oven to 400. Cook macaroni noodles in water till almost done, drain. Add noodles to baking/casserole dish. Stir in cheese cubes. Add garlic salt to taste (add as much as you would to salt your food, you can always add more salt later when you’re eating it). Add as much milk until noodles are almost/barely covered (my favorite is canned milk). Sprinkle with paprika. Cook in oven uncovered until milk has boiled out (about 30-45 minutes).

before and after

Before she goes to bed (post bath-time).....look at those ringlets!
Sorry its out of focus...our camera is old

After she wakes up....hahahah

Potty training begins

And so it begins.....

Its really all just fun and games right now, but I hope that in 6 months or will have transitioned into full time potty use. Wishful thinking? Perhaps
She loves it when her baby sits on there and instructs her baby just want to do. "Go poop baby. Good girl"

Monkeys jumping on the bed

Penny is quite independent these days. Dominic and I were playing Bakugan on the floor and Penny was serenading us with 3 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed...only...she didn't want anybody else singing it but her.

Plug Broken

Penny's pacifier (we call it a Plug) has been giving her a rash above her lip. Its annoying and because she's sucking on it doesn't go away. On Saturday it was getting pretty bad and I decided that it was time to say goodbye to the Plug. I got scissors and snipped the ends off in front of Penny. I did them all....otherwise I know my weakness and would have after a few hours given her an un-cut one.

She put one in her mouth, said "broken....scissors....broke it" She tried them all hoping to find one that she could settle with to no avail. It was kindof sad but she wasn't upset. It was just very matter of fact. At naptime it took 1.5 hours to get her to sleep because she usually uses her plug to relax her. It took a lot of patience from her and I to get her to sleep, but she did it. Bedtime was a hyper nightmare....but after a good hour...she was calm enough to relax. Each night gets better.

This picture was night 2.....she still wanted to hold the plug even though she couldn't suck on it. Her face was nuzzled into my pillow and I couldn't see it until I took the pillow away....and found the plug in her mouth backwards. Desperate to try anything that may pacify.... she so stinking sweet.
Yay! No more Plug! No more Panic! Other news is we brought the potty in from the garage and she has started to sit on it and pretend-play with it. Right now its just a toy with no pressure. But she is learning what happens on the potty. They grow up so fast......... I savor every stage.

Vaseline, not just for lips

Penny found Grandma's stash of vaseline in her room so she dug right in. I heard her go in there and then it was just too quiet for a few minutes. I went in to see what all the non-noise was all about and found her elbow deep in a HUGE vat of vaseline. Since she'd already done the deed, we pulled out the camera and watched her play with what was all over her body. I imagine it felt very cool (to the 17 month old mind) because her hands were slipping and sliding all over her body and she was a giggling mess.

I washed her hair in the bath about 10 times and this is still how much vaseline was in it when she got out. It could still stand on end at any given part of her head. It took another 3 days for it to be completely gone. Sean said the bath-tub was a bit slippery the next day when he went to take a shower.
Her skin was nice and supple though. Dominic is such a goof and brings so much laughter into our day.

Gaining weight

Today Dominic says:

Mom, its so wierd....I put one foot on the scale and it was 50 pounds and then I put the other foot on the scale and it was 50 pounds. But when I put both feet on the scale its still only 50 pounds. I just don't get it, I should weigh 100 pounds! And no matter how hard I try to press down while I'm standing it won't do more than 50....its so wierd!

"I love you Dominic" -mom

A few months ago he ran around the house a few times, did some pushups, jumped rope and then ate a few carrots. I didn't pay any attention to it until he came into the living room sulking.

"Whats wrong Dominic?"

"I did tons of exercise and ate good food so that I could get bigger, but I still only weigh 50 pounds! I don't get it!"

We had a talk about long term habits that make changes to our body...... he gets it now.

So cute, as my friend Chris would say, he's 50 pounds of pure solid muscle.

Clippies with a Grippie!

I got a sample of these clips in the mail (for Penny) and they are super fabulous. The makers of MacyMae clippies have put a non-slip silicone sticker on their clips so that they don't come out of your little bundles hair and.....THEY REALLY DO WORK! I know that I have some big hair clips that have this and it is the only thing that keeps them in and functional by the end of the day. So, when I was contacted about the little girl ones my first thought was "GENIOUS!"

Now....if only they could make a little finger trap that stopped Penny from PULLING them out.

Check out the site to see more fabulous clippies from Macymae (please make sure you use this spelling when looking them up or you will see porn)

You can also use the coupon code MacyMae for 25% off all MacyMae sets!
